The introduction of a new harness design in Australia for strollers & prams has had mixed results, with many designs being quite fiddly to use. But I’d like to be the first to put up my hand and declare the design of the new Bugaboo Bee3’s harness awesome.
We’re lucky in Australia. We have a very active Australian Safety Standard for Prams and Strollers advisory board and when they identify a safety issue, they are quick to act. So it’s only to be expected that after a few emergancies where the rescue of a baby had been hampered by a stroller harness, a new quick release harness was introduced and has been rolling out progressivly over the past 12 months or so.
(For those of you who haven’t seen the new quick release harness, basically the over-the-shoulder & around-the-waist straps used to be one piece. Now they are two. So when you hit the ‘go’ button, your baby is released instantly.)
Bugaboo have taken this Aussie safety requirement one step further by implementing their new quick release harness world-wide, incorporating the design into the new Bee3. And while some Bugaboo fans aren’t so impressed, after using it, I certainly am.
The Bugaboo Bee3’s new harness is unique. The over-the-shoulder straps are stiff & moulded in a curved shape so they sit over your baby’s shoulders. You just slide your baby up under them and click them in and your baby is secured. Then clip in the waist straps & you’re ready to go. No need to pull the straps out from behind your baby & pull their arms though.
To release your baby, press the middle button and all the clips release and the harness falls open. No need to wrestle your baby out.
Initially, like me, you might be concerned that your baby can easily press the button & release themselves – which would be a significant hazard. But the button has just enough resistance to make it easy for you but too hard for chubby little hands.
Personally, I’d like to see this quick release design on more harnessed nursery products. Kudos to you Bugaboo for taking a good idea and turning it into great design. (I guess that’s why we pay the premium price!)
The Bugaboo Bee3 is priced at $949 (without bassinet) and is currently available at all Bugaboo stockists.
